The Campbell Theater Playhouse was a CBS Radio drama series directed by and starring Orsen Welles and produced by John Houseman. It was a continuation of their earlier program Mercury Theater On the Air.

The program featured adaptations of the world's best literature and dramas, including Show Boat (featuring Edna Ferber as Parthy), Dodsworth, Liliom, A Farewell to Arms, and Les Miserables.

The Campbell Playhouse broadcast “A Christmas Carol” twice. The first was in 1938 and featured Welles as Scrooge. In 1939 they performed it again, this time with Lionel Barrymore as Scrooge.

CBS radio ran periodic special braodcasts from 1938 until 1946. These specials focused on big news events, musical specials, and, of course, Christmas.

This episode is an adaptation of Clement Moore’s famous poem “Twas the Night Before Christmas” in which we get to experience the mother and father headed off to bed while the children wait with anticipation. We also get to travel to the North Pole where Santa and the elves as frantically getting ready to deliver their gifts. It is a charming celebration of Christmas.
